Sarah Auerbach and Cindy Nelson share sophisticated taste, a keen eye for style, and a passion for bringing these to the local Amherst scene. Read below to learn more about Sarah and Cindy, and how they came together to make Amherst Style.
After college, Cindy Nelson started her career in New York in men’s fashion. After marrying her husband Rolf, who is a chef, they shared adventures including inn keeping and restaurant work in North Carolina, Wyoming and Oregon before returning to their summer home of Nantucket. Thereafter they took ownership of the Sconset Café, which they continue to run today having just celebrated their 15th successful year.
In the mid 90’s Cindy and Rolf sought out Amherst as their main residence, and quickly settled into the rhythms of the Pioneer Valley with their two children.
 Sarah Auerbach learned of her love for color and style while studying art history in Florence, Italy during her junior year of college. After college, she followed her business interests into a career in sales and marketing with IBM, which lasted over 15 years. During this time, Sarah married her husband, Scott, now a chemistry professor at UMass. Sarah’s career in IBM took her from Boston to San Francisco and Los Angeles, before moving to Amherst where she has lived for over 14 years with Scott and their three children.
Sarah eventually decided to leave IBM to return to her passion for color and style with her new business partner, Cindy Nelson.
Cindy and Sarah met in 2000 through their children and immediately connected through their long-standing love of fine homes and interior decorating. Cindy designed and (with Doug Kohl) built their home in Amherst; Sarah designed and oversaw major renovations to her family’s home. As word spread of Cindy’s and Sarah’s skills, friends sought them out for advice on home decorating projects. Eventually Cindy and Sarah advertised in an online elementary school newsletter; this received an immediate and overwhelming response. Amherst Style was born!
Since then, Amherst Style has grown to become recognized as a premier provider of Home Staging® Services in the Pioneer Valley. Sarah and Cindy are both Accredited Staging® Professionals with certifications in Feng Shui. Sarah is also a licensed Realtor®. In addition, Cindy and Sarah are both landlords, managing their personal real estate holdings.
